Frequently Asked
Common Questions
Quick answers to the questions we hear most from boat lift owners in the Wilmington area.
How often should I have my boat lift inspected?
At minimum once a year, and ideally twice — before boating season starts and again at the end of the season. Salt water, sun, and regular use take a steady toll on cables, motors, and structural components, and small issues compound quickly when ignored. Our annual service plan schedules these inspections automatically so you never miss one.
What's included in the Dock Doctors service plan?
A full system inspection of cables, pulleys, bearings, motor and gearbox, electrical and controls, cradle and bunks, frame and mounting, and limit switches. Hands-on maintenance (lubrication, corrosion treatment), minor repairs up to a capped amount on each visit, and a written report of findings. Larger repairs are quoted separately with your approval.
Do you service boat lifts in Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, and Hampstead?
Yes. We regularly service the greater Wilmington area including Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, Figure Eight Island, Ogden, Hampstead, Topsail Island, and Surf City. If you're on the water in New Hanover or Pender County, we can get to you.
What are the most common boat lift problems you see?
Frayed or corroded cables, worn pulleys and bearings, loose or corroded electrical connections, motor brushes nearing end of life, and stressed mounting hardware. Catching these during a routine visit is a quick fix; leaving them for a year can mean a stranded boat or a replacement lift.
How long does a boat lift last with regular maintenance?
A quality aluminum lift with annual preventative maintenance can easily last 20+ years. Without maintenance, saltwater corrosion, cable wear, and motor issues can cut that lifespan in half. Regular greasing, corrosion treatment, and hardware checks are the single biggest factors in long lift life.
Do you install new boat lifts or only service existing ones?
Both. We handle new lift installations, relocations when you move or restructure your dock, and upgrades when you get a new boat that needs a different capacity. Call us to talk through your setup.
